“And then I shot Michael Collins…”

“The Birth of a Nation” is the title of a stunning pictorial record of how the Irish state came into being almost a century ago, with three Irish Independent photographic supplements covering the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War. These different ads were all just very simple ways of trying to remind people exactly how important and life-changing these events were. Whether it’s simply by using very evocative quotes, by using the blood-splatter in the shape of Ireland, by referring to the signatories of the proclamation as being the fathers of modern Ireland, or by simply reminding people of how dangerous and intense these events were, each ad is deeply resonant in it’s own way and is bound to make the reader curious to re-live the events through the supplements.
